In 1887 Penn State went undefeated in football, outscoring their opponents 78-0.  Joe Paterno was not the coach. In fact, Penn State did not have a head coach football that year.

Since 1966, when Joe Paterno did become head coach, Penn State has matched the feat of that inaugural team’s undefeated season five times. Perhaps more importantly, from 1966 to 1999 Penn State had only one losing season and established itself as a national powerhouse that could compete for a national championship nearly every year. However, from 2000 to 2004 Penn State managed only one winning season. In that time Penn State’s coach seemed to transform almost instantaneously to from living legend to historic relic.

But apparently the rumors of Paterno’s demise have been greatly exaggerated.  And for those of you that think the game has passed him by, well, that is your problem.
